1U Servers occupy one rack unit - 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) in height, and are ideal for both small and large projects. 1U servers offer fast storage, processing power, and energy efficiency, and typically offer support for a single-slot full-height PCIe expansion card all in an extremely small footprint, and are commonly used for highly versatile applications ranging anywhere from domain controllers, firewalls and other small network appliances, to file servers and network attached storage (NAS), all the way up to high performance computing and virtualization. 1U Servers are the perfect solution for space-constrained environments, and cost effective options when rack space is at an all-time premium, at the expense of expandability and acoustic noise. If multiple PCIe cards, or high-capacity storage is needed, a 2U or larger server may be a better fit for your project.
2U Servers occupy two rack units, or 3.5 inches (88.90 mm) in height, and strike a balance between scalability, performance and expandability. While retaining a compact design, these systems can support up to three full-height, or seven low-profile PCIe expansion cards making them ideal for custom hardware integration, gpu acceleration, data acquisition and network appliances. These systems range anywhere from extremely short-depth mini servers, all the way up to 12 hot-swap bay models for high-capacity storage. These systems are commonly used for video surveillance, file servers, database management, and cloud computing. If multiple full-height or dual slot PCIe cards are needed for your project, or a quiet server is needed for your environment, a 3U or 4U server may be a better fit for your project.
3U Servers occupy three rack units, or 5.25 inches (133.35 mm) in height, and provide a versatile solution for enterprise applications that require multiple full-height PCIe cards. These servers are ideal for businesses needing powerful networking, storage controllers, or specialized hardware. Many 3U servers also offer support for legacy hardware such as 5V PCIe cards, full-sized telemetry and capture cards, and offer 5.25" bays for mobile racks, optical drives, or other additional specialized hardware devices. Whether for virtualization, data processing, or custom appliance servers, 3U servers deliver an ideal balance of expandability, and custom or legacy integration while still conserving on rack space, with up to 14 3U servers able to fit in a standard 42U rack. One thing to keep in mind is that 3U servers may not have the space required for over-sized PCIe cards such as the latest powerful GPUs, which often have plastic shrouds that exceed 3U height. If over-sized PCIe cards are needed, a 4U server may be a better fit for your project.
4U Servers occupy four rack units, or 7 inches (177.80 mm) in height, and are unmatched in terms of expandability and power, making them the top choice for projects requiring maximum PCIe card support and storage capacity. These servers provide ample internal space for hardware additions, and full-height or oversized PCIe cards such as powerful GPUs that would not fit in a 3U or smaller chassis. These servers support versatile power options, and can provide all the way up to 48 hot-swap bays for high-capacity storage. Perfect for data centers or virtualization environments that require management of vast amounts of data, or unique and demanding projects that require the utmost expansion capability. 4U Servers are limited in redundant power supply options, if redundancy is needed a 2U or 3U server may be a better fit for your project.
